Termite Extermination within Australian Homes located in the Suburbs

Have you found termites in your residence or on your land? If you have found that they are already active within your house, you’ll be looking to speak to a termite exterminator or termite control specialist about removal ASAP! As tiny as termites are, they can cause immense damage within a few months, which would result in your home to undergo expensive repairs – we’re talking thousands and thousands of dollars – potentially much, much more than any of the removal strategies currently available.

What’s involved in termite removal?

There are various strategies regarding termite control. Each treatment would depend on the type of property you have as well as the species found present and involved in the infestation, where the termites are found in your building and the extent of the infestation.

Termite control and removal isn’t as easy as buying a spray and spraying the termites you can find and hoping to deter the others. This is because termites always eat the wood from the inside out and thus are very hard to actually see. Subterranean termites – the most commonly found species in suburban Australia – get into your home via their underground tunnels and mud tunnel networks which they construct to travel from your home to their colony and back. This colony is often a fair distance away: so to completely remove the termites from your home you need to exterminate the whole colony.

How is this achieved?

The regular approach to removal of subterranean termites would be dusting in the area where the infestation is found (alternatively baiting boxes can be used to draw in the termites and then dust them) with a termite removal product which doesn’t immediately kill the termites but lets them take it back to their colony and destroy them all. This is because termites eat the other termites when they die and thus infect themselves with the poison.

Experts often combine this strategy with the placing of a chemical (physical) barrier in the earth surrounding the house. Modern products and chemical barriers perform a very similar function to that of the dust. The termites can’t actually sense or detect the physical barrier, so instead of trying to avoid it or find alternative entry they pass through the barrier and pick up the poison which is in turn taken back to the colony where it is spread and gradually the termite colony is exterminated.

Can termite removal be done by the home owner?

You should always get an expert to take care of termite removal. Termites aren’t just difficult to find, but many of the chemicals and products use for proper termite extermination and control are only able to be applied by a licensed pest control professional.
